The Triangle Of Death

I'm sure some of you cop's wives out there have heard of the "Triangle Of Death" regarding police uniforms. For those of my readers that think I am talking about a bizarre murder plot or something, I will explain. The majority of cop uniforms out there are dark blue or some are even black. The regulation uniform for thousands of police departments is to wear a white t-shirt underneath of the dark shirt which is then left open a button or two. These two shirts and colors together create a triangle. This triangle has become a perfect target for criminals to shoot at and it is in a very dangerous place for being shot.

Many police departments are now switching to a dark colored t-shirt as regulation instead of the white so as not to create any type of triangle but rather to just all blend together. My husbands PD made the switch about 6 months ago. I have to admit that at first it sounded really funny like an old Sherlock Holmes movie (big fan). Then after I really thought about it, it made a lot of sense to me. It is one area exposed with the bullet proof vest on and apparently can have fatal results when shot in that specific location.

Have any of you out there ever heard of this? Do you or does your husband still wear the TOD? Has his/your department made the switch yet? Is this the first time that you have read about it? Tell me what you think.

I'd never heard of this before, but now that you mention it, it seems like a bad idea to have them wear white t-shirts. Yikes!

I've read about it in an article about scumbag gangbangers awhile ago. I have lots of LA County Sheriff's deputies as neighbors, I will have to ask them. Come to think of it, I don't recall seeing a tshirt on a P.O. or deputy, but our weather is 1000 x hotter.

I admit it... never heard of it. But then again, I think they wear black t-shirts at Husband's department, so that may be why.

Good post... good info!

Fascinating. Never heard of it. Makes sense though. Winter uniform here is long sleeve with a clip-on tie--so no TOD there. But summer is short sleeve, lightest blue shirt with the white tee (not a lot of contrast). EOD and SWAT where the dark utility uniform and a dark tee. Now I guess I know why! I'll have to ask him about that.

I have also never heard of this. I heard, one time, a police chief admonishing his new hire not to wear a white T-shirt but I had no idea why. And my husband's department has worn black Ts with thier black uniforms from day one that he started here. Now I am glad.

My brother in-law is an auxiliary officer as well as a volunteer fireman. I should talk to my sister about this. Thanks Val!
