E-mail This!

Ever go to a website and find something fabulous that you want to e-mail to someone but the website/page does not have an e-mailing option. I have run in to that so many times. I would want to e-mail the entire website/page to someone rather than give a link which doesn't always work. I stumbled onto the E-mail This service that is free from Clickability and can be used by simply adding their E-mail This button to my browser (currently I have it on my toolbar - so handy). I think I discovered it when I was on TIMES website. If you are interested check it out. You can develop an address book or import an existing address book from your personal information manager. Now I am able to e-mail any website/page to anyone any time.

Headphone Happiness

I just thought I would share this idea that my husband and I came up with recently. We used to go the the show all the time, that was just about our favorite thing. Now that we have our son we have to rent movies. A few months back we first tried, and it was minimally enjoyable. Why? Our son is the lightest sleeper . . . seriously. Plus we have a very little house and a vaulted ceiling living room right outside our sons door, this makes everything louder (hardwood floors don't help either). In the beginning we had the sound barely on, turned on the subtitles, scootched the loveseat right up to the front of the TV and had to whisper to each other any movie comments or questions. I should also mention my son has a white noise machine in his room and we would turn on the bathroom fan (bathroom is right next to his room) to muffle more sound. As time went by our son could tolerate more sound but never anything very noisy, especially not stereo sound at an audible level for special effects and the such.

I thought of getting some headphones so we could watch movies at a more audible level. Our TV does not have a headphone jack but it is hooked up to our stereo. So we went to Best Buy and purchased 2 pairs of headphones (they are about $25/pair, not the ipod earbuds or walkman kind), an extension (so the headphones could reach the couch), and a splitter so we could hook up both pairs of headphones.

This worked fabulously. There are a few tiny things that take some getting used to though: 1) The headphone cords. 2) We can't really talk to each other while watching a movie because we are each wearing headphones. I should also mention that we have a baby monitor that has sound AND lights that we place directly in front of us while we are watching movies. This way if we don't hear the sound clearly (we almost always do anyhow) we see the lights and immediately hit pause and investigate. It may not be the movie theatre but it is something we can do together "after hours", well besides makin' more babies. Not yet thank you very much.

The investment was about $70-$80 which may seem like a lot but is well worth the investment to be able to watch movies kinda like normal people again.

Bigelow's Orange & Spice Herbal Tea

Thank goodness I found this tea. My true favorite tea is Bigelow's Constant Comment. I am however still avoiding any and all caffeine due to breastfeeding a 14 month old who is extremely sensitive to it. Also know that decaffeinated tea is not the same as caffeine free. Decaffeinated tea is decaffeinated with a chemical process whereas caffeine free tea is caffeine free naturally, I drink caffeine free. Who needs more chemicals in their bodies, right? I was drinking several different kinds of tea and was never really satisfied because it wasn't Constant Comment or a spicy chai which I also love. So one day when I was shopping at Meijer (where I never shop), I found Bigelow's Orange & Spice. It's spicy and has a mellow orange taste similar to Constant Comment. I am not a huge fan of extremely fruity teas but this is more spice than orange. I have a huge pottery cup I use from a 2nd hand store and I like to steep extra long for a stronger taste. I typically put 1 heaping teaspoon full of honey in each time. I like to have a cup of tea at night after little guy has finally gone to bed. I enjoy it as I watch either a movie with Mr. Mommaval or with the news, etc. That is how I like to wind down. I kicked coffee after little guy was born, and I no longer drink pop of any kind unless it's a special occasion but then even still just a bit. Once I made the change to water it's way too sweet for me now, plus I'm trying to eat right. I'm glad I found tea. It is a comfort and good for you in so many ways. I find herbal tea to be very relaxing. This summer I plan on making it the same but then adding lots of ice and maybe some lemon. This is by far my favorite of all the other herbals I've been drinking. I will review them one by one in the months to come.

Black Bean Burgers For Dinner

OK, I have to announce I am officially down 17 pounds 8 ounces as of this morning. This is a huge deal because when I first had little guy, my weight plummeted down pretty well. I wasn't eating anything just sleeping all the time in pj's and I had tons of work to do to get the breastfeeding on track . . . . round the clock. It was a very dark time in my life to say in the least. Anywho, I was told by the LC's, my mother, and my doctors that if I wanted my body to produce the milk that was needed to feed this baby I had to eat and eat well. That was normally not a problem but with a new baby and a strict lactation program it wasn't easy. I ate and I ate well and I actually got back up within 11 pounds of my full pregnancy weight, but on the bright side the milk was a flowin'!! I graduated from the lactation department's program last year on this date. So I was going to bake a pan of brownies for the LC's, Beth was my saviour but all the LC's were top notch.

On with my story. The weight that I plummeted to was 28 pounds below my full pregnancy weight (I put on 54 total . . . . oink). So today I am actually 29 pounds below my full pregnancy weight. I only have 25 to go to be back at my weight at conception. When I conceived I was still higher than I am happy to be at but I will take it if this whole eating thing continues to go well.

Tonight for dinner I made Morningstar's Black Bean Burgers. I have been researching that soy is not very good for you unless it's fermented so I have been trying my darndest to not each too much of the unfermented stuff. These burgers do have soy in them but I would love dearly to make my own black bean patties one day soon. Until then I thought I'd give the store-bought ones a whirl. They have black beans, corn, and I saw a few pieces of barley in the crumbles on my plate. These are a little salty but have a southwestern flavor. They are high in protein, fiber and potassium. They are low in calories, fat, cholesterol, carbs, & sugar. I would buy them again but my only dislike is that they were a little too salty. I actually cut one in half and ate in a wheat pita leftover from the falafel. I then added fresh onions, tomatoes, & lettuce and a smidgen of ranch dressing. Yes it is a "burger" but with the southwestern flavor I thought it would taste better than ketchup, etc. I also figured that eating it in a wheat pita I would avoid bleached flours and as many carbs as a hamburger bun. On the box front they serve with a bit of salsa and cheese, lettuce & onions on a regular bun. Maybe I'll try that next time. They tout 74% less fat than ground beef and 12 grams of protein on the front of the box. I would recommend them but not for an all the time thing because of the saltiness.

I just checked out some vegetarian and vegan cookbooks from the library. I get really tired of salads and "low fat" recipes. Many of the dish's I find in these cookbooks are low fat naturally, I'd rather cook that way. I plan on purchasing a food processor and a juicer too in the next few weeks. I am finding more and more things to make with a food processor these days with my new healthy eating/diet regimen. I plan to post some new healthy recipes in the near future. I am looking for a cookbook that specializes in bean and lentil cooking. If anyone out there knows of one please leave me a comment. As always, if you find or try a great & healthy recipe of any kind please e-mail me or paste into a comment box. Thanks!

WTF?

I just got this e-mail from Miss Lily. I didn't reply very nicely. How dare this little scammer use blogspot to obtain e-mail addresses. I just opened this e-mail account for my blog only just about a month ago. Guess it doesn't take long for all the fraudulent folks to begin to take advantage. Has anyone ever seen this letter before? I swear I did about a year ago. It was either sent as a mass e-mail with a scam warning or it was on snopes as certified BS. Here goes:

From: Lily Jones

Email..............

Dear Belove one

Based on your profile, l am happy to request for your assistance because I beleive that you are not going to betrayed the trust which I am going to lay on you Dear Beloved i pray all is well with you and Other members of your family.

My name is Lily 20 years old and the only daughter of my late parents Mr.and Mrs Jones, My father was a highly reputable busnness magnet-(a cocoa merchant) who operated in the capital of Ivory coast during his days. It is sad to say that he passed away mysteriously in France during one of his business trips abroad on 12th.November 2005.Though his sudden death was linked or rather suspected to have been masterminded by an uncle of his who travelled with him at that time, but God knows the truth!

My mother died when I was just 6 years old, and since then my father took me so special. Before the death of my Father on November 12th 2005 he called the secretary who accompanied him to the hospital and told her that he has the sum of
(USD$17.5 000 000) Seventeen Milion five hundred thousand dollars left in a metalic trunk trunk box, wich he deposited in a Security Company here in abidjan, that he registered it as family valuable items for security reasons, he told the secretary
that I should contact the Company for them to know me as his next of kin wich I have did as he instructed,

He also told the secretary that I should not let any of his relations to know about this because he was kiled by them and if they know about it, that they will do nothing but to kill me in other to take hold of every thing,
He told her that I should seek for a foriegn partner abroad who will help me retreived the trunk box and also travel with him or her in other to continue my Live and Education and also to start a Bussines relationship with the person whom can take cear of me in the fucture,

My dear, this is why I have come incontact with you in order to help me retreive that trunk box from the Security Companys custody and send it direct to your country and also to make an arrangement for me on how I will come over to your country in other to continue my Live and Education and also to go into bussines relationship with you hence I am still a child and I dont know any thing about bussines,

I am just 20 years old and a university undergraduate and really don't know what to do. this is because I have suffered a lot of set backs as a result of incessant political crisis here in Ivory coast. The death of my father actually brought sorrow
to my life, My dear, I am in a sincere desire of your humble assistance in this regards and your suggestions and ideas will be highly regarded.

Now permit me to ask these few questions:

1. Can I completely trust you?
2.Can you accept me as your own blood Sister (Or Doughter)?
3.What percentage of the total amount in question will be good for you?

Consider this and get back to me as soon as possible with your full assurance that you will not disapoint me in this issue so that i can give you the contact of the Security Company where my late Father deposited that trunk box for you to contact
them on how the trunk box will be retreived from their custody and deliver to your country,

Thank you soo much for your understanding and may almighty God bless you and your Family to the Glory of God Almighty,

My sincere regards,
Miss Lily.

Falafel Rerun

OK today we are going to the zoo and the baby is napping as I type. Daddy is in the shower. I am making the remaining falafel for lunch to eat before we go to the zoo. I decided to look online to see if I could find instructions for baking falafel*. I really hate to fry food and it is not good for you even in healthy oil. I found instructions on about.com. Although I had my own batter already from the store I figured I could just use the baking instructions from a baked falafel recipe. I may add that today after the batter was in the fridge all night and colder and firmer it was much easier to work with. I could not have rolled it in a ball yesterday, it was too mushy. So I rolled ping pong sized balls and placed in a baking dish thats bottom was pre-drizzled with EVOO. I preheated oven to 350 and baked 15-20 minutes flipping over halfway. They were great and I did not miss all the grease. They still have some olive oil on them but who cares how much you eat of that. I found a new family favorite. Even the baby loves it. Try it some time if you get the chance. If you would like to make from scratch here's the recipe I found on about.com, otherwise the boxed mix is healthy and easy.

*Woops, the baking directions are on the box which I just dug out of the recycle bin. Oh well.

Falafel For Dinner . . . . A Thumbs Up!

So as many of you know I am trying to lose weight and eat a whole heck of a lot better too. I have been trying to eat more veggies and beans and things like that. I am taking it very easy with the meat. I am not nor do I want to be a vegetarian but vegetarian food is often very good, good for you and much easier on your waistline. So today I picked up a box of Casbah Falafel Mix. Its just a few dollars in the pre-packaged foods aisle or ethnic aisle at the grocery store. They recommend serving it in a pita with yogurt sauce (recipe for sauce is on the side of the box and is very simple once you buy the ingredients). They also suggest serving with fresh tomatoes, lettuce, and onion.

Heres GemsInIsrael.com's definition: Falafel: Chickpea and vegetable mixture made into balls and fried. Served in pita bread this is most common fast food in the country, which is served with a variety of salads, pickles etc.

I am not a fan of frying food but if you use the right oil that is just about the worst part of it. It is made from all good things. I wonder if I can somehow spritz with oil and bake it. One day I hope to make it from scratch but until then the boxed mix was quite good. I would recommend this to anyone, even our baby cried until we gave him some. He also loved it. We made sure to slather his with yogurt sauce. It was a hit. I made the entire box but only fried up about half of it.

Tomorrow I will either make the rest of the falafel or we will have the spicy black bean burgers I found in the frozen section. I will eat those also on a whole wheat pita with a slice of cheese, ranch dressing, lettuce, tomato, & onions. Will let you know how those are when/if I make them tomorrow. Suppose I could skip the pita and just eat kinda like a salad with the burger on the bottom. Anyone have any excellent vegetarian recipes they'd like to share please send them my way or paste them into a comment box. Thanks!

Major Bummer!

Today is my husbands Saturday. As a cop his days off rotates every 4 weeks. So, right now he has Monday and Tuesday off for the next 4 weeks. When his schedule shifts to the next 2 days off (Tuesday & Wednesday) he gets a 3 day weekend, including all three days. So today is his Saturday. I love when his days off are weekdays because if we want to go anywhere and do something everyone else does not have the day off. We have never liked crowds so if we go places like the zoo or mall often we have the whole place to ourselves (almost). Plus having to wait anywhere with a baby is almost never a good thing, specially ours who does not tolerate waiting most of the time.

Today we were planning to go to the zoo. He went to the Brookfield Zoo website and even bought the family pass. We would have to make it today, it is supposed to rain this afternoon and rain hard tomorrow. We were sitting and watching You Are What You Eat together while the baby was napping and I had a cup of tea . . . . ahhh! Then he went to take a shower and the phone rang. It was the Assistant States Attorneys office calling asking to speak to Officer _____ . He got off the phone and looking very down in the mouth said he had to go to trial today, he had to be there at 1pm (it was approximately 11:45 am).

I am very slowly getting used to being disappointed like this. That is a sad thought just typing it. We knew it was going to be like this but not til it IS your life does it truly begin to effect you. So I always have a plan B somewhere in the cobwebs of my brain. It stinks bad enough that many holidays he isn't with us or if he is it's for just a short bit. I try very hard to work around it and create a life no matter how weird, that includes daddy in almost any/every holiday/birthday/function. Days like today make me want to go right out and get some huge cookies with frosting. Now that I am down 16.6 pounds I don't though. After having a cheat meal yesterday of corned beef and cabbage at my in-laws the scale was up nearly 2 pounds but I think alot of that is water because the meat was so salty. Plus when I took my socks off to take my shower there were sock indentations on my ankles. I'll have to up the water, vegetables, & tea today.

Guess baby, doggy and I will have to bundle up and go for a walk before the afternoon rain comes. My big outing today will be to cash the arcade check and fill up my tank, maybe get some groceries too. Whoopie! (That is said very unenthusiastically). Wah!

16.6 Pounds Today!

Believe it or not (I didn't), I was soooo hungry last night I had 2 pieces of sourdough bread with real butter. It was from California Pizza Kitchen. I also had their Miso Salad. It's so good for you. Here's the menu description:

Shredded Napa cabbage with fresh avocado, julienne cucumbers, daikon, edamame, carrots, red cabbage, green onions, cilantro, crispy rice noodles and crispy wontons tossed in a Miso dressing. Also available with chilled-grilled chicken or blue crab & shrimp.

Before this diet never something I would have ordered. Miso is so good for you. I really encourage anyone who lives near a CPK to try it. I get chicken on it sometimes. Anywho, after dinner I asked my husband to go through the Oberweis Dairy drive thru. They have killer ice cream. I ate a single scoop of chocolate chip in a waffle cone. After all that I was still down this morning. Almost 2 whole pounds. I couldn't believe it.

I saw another robin yesterday and one the day before too. That makes 3 this season. Come on spring, what are you waitin' for? I was able to open all the windows yesterday and run my errands with no coat/hat/mittens on. It felt so good. Now everything is just so gross and dirt/litter covered. Looking forward to a few really good storms.

Daddy is working the arcade tonight. They offer side jobs at various places like that to keep a lid on the troublemakers. Nice thing is that they often pay in cash. Gotta love that on the in-between payday week. Tomorrow night we are going to my father & step-mother-in-laws house for corned beef dinner. Can't wait. They are the ones I completely adore. It's colder today but baby, dog, & me are going to bundle up and head out for a walk right now. See ya later!

We're Staying Put!

Well our realtor came over yesterday. Seems that the market is as bad or worse than we thought. We were hoping to escape our neighbors son graduating high school and all the F!@#$^& parties that they'll have all summer right under baby's window. Did I ever mention that I hate the neighbors? I promise to post a photo of their yard soon so everyone can enjoy looking at it like I do every day . . . . . . after day, after day. It is good that we completely remodeled the entire house accept the laundry room. It is also good that we refinanced and paid a ton of our bills off with the money we made. It is not good that we still love here and we will not be seeing our way out til we find 6-10 grand to buy a new house or pay that much into our equity very rapidly and soon. Oh well. We were both disappointed but it was either sell the house or get a new car. Guess who gets the new car? Yep, me!!!!! Yeah. I have never in my life had a new car and will be more than happy to give the frumpy minivan to my husband. Hee! Hee! A cop/father/husband driving a big old beige minivan to the PD. I'm dyin'! I didn't want the damn thing in the first place, just took it for the whole "safety for the baby" aspect. Gotta go, a little somebody who woke up from their nap is screeching for me.

15 pounds today! I could have gone more but I went easy while I was sick I ate more of what I wanted. Didn't think bare minimums was a good idea when I was feeling feverish and very hungry. After 5 days fever finally broke on Tuesday and cough is loosening up alot too. Phew! No pneumonia but I have an upper respiratory infection that called for antibiotics. Yuck, I hate when I have to take them. Turns my whole digestive & female tract on end. First the diarrhea, then the yeast. I can hardly wait! Enjoy your untainted tracts today ladies!

Oooh! Oooh! Oooh! I just spotted my first robin this year. I ran to grab the camera so I could prove it to you guys. It was gone when I got back to the back door. Spring is coming. I saw a robin with my own eyes. Can you tell I am a huge fan of spring? Hating winter gets so old. Yeah! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, the long, cold, dark, depressing, winter, tunnel.

Pinching At Last!

Yep, that's right. My little stinker is finally pinch-grasping. He started with cookies (hey, I was desperate . . . . . it worked though, Barnums Animals by the way). Then he worked his way to crackers, then down to Goldfish. Finally he has mastered Cheerios. Hooray! He loves it too. Yesterday I got daring and cut pizza into pincher size bits, he did it. Then I tried overly ripe bananas to go with the pizza. Well, that was pushing it because it was so slimy & mushy even I could hardly pick it up. I am so excited and relieved. Daddy is quite impressed. Our lives can go on now a little but without having to stick everything in his mouth every time he wants to snack. Finally I found these cute little crackers Annie's Whole Wheat Bunnies (pictured above). He likes them and they are healthy too (unfortunately the dog gets whatever the baby drops). I place a few on a chair and let him eat them as he walks around for a snack. Now we are going to work on clapping, body parts and eventually possibly a spoon?

Frustrated And Feeling Crappy!

Fever, chills, chest congestion, cough, sinus congestion, runny & stuffy nose (how does it do that?) As I type this I am wearing my winter coat, sweatshirt w/the hood up and tied, shirt, jeans, socks, slippers . . . . . . . . . . still cold. While breastfeeding I can take 2 different cough medicines both which do nothing. I got myself some Fishermans Friend Cough Drops, Vicks Rub, Saline Nasal Spray, Kleenex, 2 different kinds of cold & wellness teas both of which should not be taken while breastfeeding (had to look up on internet after purchasing), ARRGHHH! This is my least favorite part of breastfeeding. If it doesn't mess up your milk supply then most likely it is not safe for infants., or vise versa. My husband got up at 3 am to go to the bathroom then baby woke up to. Daddy got out of shower at 5:30 am, guess who got up too? Baby then would not go back to sleep so I fed breakfast then he kept falling and crying while I was finishing my breakfast so I held him in my lap and he passed out. Advantage was I got a shower, disadvantage was I got shit for rest all night cause of coughing and everybody else getting up all night. Could I be married to the noisiest man alive? I get up to go pee all the time in the middle of the night without waking the baby. I can even go in the dark without making a peep (or mess for that matter). Hmmm? Have a feeling if my husband was staying at home and breastfeeding he would be a bit quieter in the am. He was to work a side job tonight and would not have been home til late. I asked him to get someone else to work the shift cause I couldn't breathe. He will be home at 4ish . . . . . . hopefully. Wah! Hoping this is not the beginning of pneumonia. Feels vaguely similar. And I'm the one who never gets sick and never goes to the doctor and gets like one cold a year which I eventually shrug off. Ha! I sincerely hope that my little one does not get this whatever the @#$% it is, it's damn wicked!

I wanted cupcakes today, so I ate some.

*Mental note: Next house must have a master bedroom & bath, kitchen, family room, and garage nowhere near a childs bedroom. Maybe the kids will have their own wing, just kidding. It will hopefully have a better layout though.

UPPP Update

Well it's been close to 5 weeks since my husband had his UPPP surgery. He no longer snores like he did but he does breathe loudly. If he sleeps on his back that is when his breathing and sleep is the worst. He still has a deviated septum that the doctor would fix next if he wants to and needs it. My husband really does not have any throat pain anymore. He can eat, drink, and do just about everything he used to. He can't snort like a pig anymore and often when he drinks he feels like the liquid will come up and out his nose. This has only happened once in early recovery but always feels like it will happen. This is supposedly very common and for most does not go away. His sleep and rest is much better but for me sometimes it sounds like I am sleeping next to a vacuum cleaner hose. Not terribly loud but lots of air. I just nudge him like I used to and tell him to roll over. He may have the septum surgery in the future, he has not decided yet. I think it will also help. Then too he will have a follow up sleep study 6 months after surgery to determine whether or not it was successful and if he should still use the CPAP machine. He tried it a few times but it is not strong enough. During the sleep study prior to the surgery the nurse told him that it was too low and he would have to wait 6 months after surgery to have it adjusted. I think that will make a huge difference too.

Overall, he is happy with the results but hoped that everything would be perfect. I think that using an adjusted CPAP and having the septum surgery will also help. We'll see.

(Hope this helps you Brian!)

You Are What You Eat

I stumbled on to a very cool new show that could possibly be my new favorite. It's called You Are What You Eat. I already love the british show called How Clean Is Your House but found this new show came on right after it the other day on BBC. It is so open and honest with a touch of british humor which is so often refreshing, it also has the same feel as the show How Clean Is Your House. A holistic nutritionist, Gillian Keith goes to an unhealthy eaters house and goes through their fridge. She then asks them to write down everything that they eat for 1 week. Then she fills a huge table top with everything that was eaten. It is alarming, even for the bad eater. Then she asks about personal health/body problems that they have such as gas, yeast, poop, etc. It's all out there. Then they take their blood and a poop sample and have it analyzed. This is disgusting but so extremely interesting and fascinating what they find. Then Gillian Keith teaches them how to eat and shop better. She then goes back after some time (I forget how long, I've only caught 2 episodes so far) to see how the once bad eater is doing. She usually finds that they have lost weight, grown thicker & stronger hair, gotten rid of gas & bloating, improved their yeast & odor problems, etc. I would recommend this show well to anyone. The only thing that is a bit hard to understand is the british terms they use for weight, some foods, etc. Even if you are thin it is interesting to see what effects food and diet have one you health. It is on the BBC channel. We have a dish and get the BBC channel but I have no idea if this is available on other pay television packages. Try and catch an episode if you can.

Attention All Electronic Goose Fans!

If you are a regular reader of Goose Juice you may have been wondering what happened to her. Her wireless doo-hickey broke and she does not have computer access except at work. Judging by her very last post titled, "Work Overload" I doubt she can do much else at work, well except work. So sit tight (where did that expression come from anyway?), cause she is going to order a new wireless thingy-ma-bopper as soon as she can. Until then perhaps you could read her old posts in case you missed them or just need some Goose Juice for your soul. Think of it like watching re-runs.
