On day two of Cop Dad's day off I was rocking Little Buddy to sleep for his nap. As I softly sang Mary Had A Little Lamb, and my little lamb was just about asleep, I suddenly was alarmed with a very loud and ear piercing, "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh!" I realized it was coming from the fire/CO2 detector in the hallway and headed outside with a sleepy, now awake Little Buddy on my hip. He is old enough to walk but was shoeless and I wanted to get out of the house fast. As I called for Cop Dad out in front, (he was mowing the neighbor's yard), he answered and came over immediately. He ran inside and went up to find what the problem was. He then called 911 cause the firemen have very sophisticated testing equipment that can detect where exactly the CO2 in your home is coming from. I could not imagine where or what would be leaking CO2.
The firemen pulled up and went inside as we waited outside as we were instructed to do by 911. They were inside for awhile. I kept wondering what this could be all about. We have remodeled our entire home over the last few years and have all new appliances, furnace, AC, water heater, etc.
Finally they came out and waved us to come back in and told us that the CO2 was coming from our oven, but only when it was turned on. We have a new oven from when we remodeled our kitchen at the end of 2006. Totally weird. Then the fireman turned on the oven and demonstrated that it went to 200 PPM (parts per million) very quickly and kept rising if he didn't turn the oven off.
I am a sahm mom as many of you know and I cook and bake regularly. Almost every food Little Buddy eats is out of the oven. I also think food is healthier and tastes better when it is baked in an oven not in the microwave. Also Cop Dad's birthday is tomorrow and he said not to spend any money on him. I had planned on buying him a scrapbook anyway (for all his police articles and letters of commendation he has gotten already) and baking brownies or chocolate chip bars for his birthday treat as well as a batch for the guys on afternoons to eat in roll call. Homemade, plus I have all the ingredients and much tastier than grocery store cake.
So now we have the Sears Appliance Repair Man coming tomorrow afternoon. Brother, so much for the birthday treats, or Little Buddy's meals. Bagh! Thank God we have an excellent CO2 detector that works well and alerted us in time before illness hit us from CO2. Suppose we will have to have the fire department come and test again before using the oven again. I highly advise everyone to get a CO2 detector if you don't already have one.
Phew, just got off the phone with my awesome SMIL who also works afternoons with Cop Dad at the PD (as a CSO) who has agreed to make a birthday treat for roll call for him. She is an absolute gem. I hated asking her because they are always helping us with babysitting for Little Buddy and numerous other things too. Thanks Leslie!!!

Wowie! How odd on the stove. Glad it's getting looked at! One of the first things we did in this house was replace the smoke detectors with smoke/CO2 detectors--old house, ya never know.
So, did the poor little guy ever get his nap?!
And happy birthday to the husband!
What's "SMIL" again? The S has me confused. Of course, my memory is short and you've probably already explained it.
I was going to find my recipe for crockpot cake, but luckily, didn't have to search. Glad the cavalry came through for you.
Hey Dori,
I thought the stove was odd too they checked for natural gas but nope just deadly CO2 detected and only when the oven was turned on. Thank God I can still use the stove and microwave. Little Buddy DID get his nap shortly after the firemen left but barely slept for an hour. OY! Thanks for the birthday wish for Cop Dad!
Meadowlark, SMIL is step-mother-in-law. Yep, lots of fabulous divorces in both families. . . . Lordy!
Would still love the crockpot cake recipe if it's not buried too deep. Sounds interesting!
How scary!! So glad you have a CO2 detector, whew!!
Oh my goodness! I don't have a CO2 detector, and now I'm rethinking that!
OMG, Nadine!
Please get one. We have a combo unit (co2/smoke) by the bedrooms in the hallway and then just a smoke detector down in the laundry room. I never thought we would need it cause everything is new, but low and behold WE DID!
I love having the CO2 detector. Except in the back of my mind I'm wondering if it is really working and the hypochondriac in me *thinks* it's CO2 I'm smelling. But that's another problem. So this is something that the fire department does and they don't mind coming out? Did they come in their big truck and everything? Have fun with the birthday festivities! That crockpot cake does sound good. . .
Ha! Funny, Mrs. Fuzz. I wondered the exact same thing. As a matter of fact, it went off last week and I thought the batteries were low. Soooo, I changed the batteries and crossed my fingers. It was indeed working and you can double check it by pressing the test button. Also, CO2 is odorless. YES, the FD does do this regularly. My FIL (retired PD) said that they do checks all the time for people. It's what we pay our taxes for and YES, the did come with the truck and all. BUT, the guys were in t-shirts and the truck was an old one with no sirens going. If yours ever goes off, feel free to give them a call, that's what they are there for :)
Oh, that is terrifying. I don't think we have a CO2 detector, so that makes the whole story that much scarier. We've had bad luck with smoke detectors going off all the time for no good reason and my husband has been known to get sick of it and smash them, it really upsets me. I'm so glad you guys have one!
Goodness! I didn't know stove's could leak CO2! Thankgoodness you had that detector. Is your stove a gas stove? If I don't have a gas stove but do have a gas water heater and heater should I just put a dectector upstairs where the appliances are - or both up and downstairs?
I definitely want to look into that.
Stacy,
Anything that has a pilot light or is gas or has igniter. Sears repair man said it can be anything carbon based that is burning, even food spill in oven. So yes that is for an electric oven too. He also said that an electric oven with cleaning feature the metal part on the element can deteriorate and create CO2 leak too. We have a CO2/Smoke detector upstairs in hall near ceiling which is where all the bedrooms and the bathroom are. We just have a smoke detector downstairs in laundry room near ceiling just off kitchen and garage. If you do not already have both or either I STRONGLY recommend it. It is odorless and can first make you ill for months if the leak is smaller then can cause convulsions, vomiting and death. Those seriously at risk are children, babies, pregnant women, and elderly BUT pets are at danger too. Please buy one. Sears repair man said the night hawk one is best cause it has a digital readout on it. We do not have that kind and wish we did. I would definitely put a detector in hallway ceiling by bedrooms for sure.
